OK, I guess that I shouldn’t read too much into this.
But at Big Man’s blog, Raving Black Lunatic, there is a little graphic about what the blog’s reading level is. That is, what level of education is required to understand the blog posts there in general.
So, early on in my own blogging, I checked, and I was high school level. Now, I’m not jealous that Big Man is college (postgrad) level. I’m not. Even though I have a postgrad degree myself and don’t know how many average high schoolers would dig pontificating with me. But, admittedly, I don’t always tackle deep stuff and I can be pretty casual. And really, is it bad that high schoolers can understand my stuff? Clearly, smart people also like my stuff, and if (supposedly) the people without college aspirations or degrees can get something out of it, great.
Then today, I figure I’ll check again today, just for the hell of it.
Junior high school.
Again, I’m not sure this is entirely a bad thing. But, I mean, I went down? I use some fairly heady concepts and words around here sometimes. (Scratches head) Makes we wonder what items will “downgrade” your blog’s readbility. I’m thinking that swear words probably knock you down a notch, because some other places I visit that can be every bit as deep as Big Man but more snarky got high school. I’m also thinking that mentioning religion much must knock you down, because I plugged in some Christian blogs I visit, some of them with pretty heady content, and they got junior high and high school kind of readability.
So, it probably isn’t bad that I’m understandable by junior high schoolers.
But somehow, I doubt the average parent wants their junior high schoolers visiting around here…
(By the way, Big Man, update your graphic. I just checked your site again, and now you’re at “Genius” level.)
And if you’re curious about your own blog’s readability level, here’s the place that claims it can figure that out for you: www.criticsrant.com/bb/reading_level.aspx)
